• No social media history: Often, fraudsters have no social media history before your first contact, which suggests that the profile was created just for the scam. However, sophisticated romance scammers can create a fake social media history.

Other tell-tale signs to watch for:

• Overly attractive profile photos: These are often stolen from elsewhere online. If they use very attractive photos of themselves, almost model-like, be cautious.
• Sparse or inconsistent profile information: A lack of background info, or conflicting stories.
• Encouraging secrecy: Asking you to keep the contact and relationship hidden from family or friends.
• Pushing to switch platforms: They’ll often ask to move the conversation of the original app or site to avoid detection.
• Early interest in your finances: They may ask about your savings, crypto assets, or banking information early in the conversation.
• Intense emotions too quickly: Fraudsters often express love or affection early on to build trust quickly.
• Sharing fake success stories: Scammers might claim to have made money through crypto or investments and offer to help you do the same.
• Pressure to invest in crypto: Rather than asking for money directly, crypto romance scammers will push you to invest or transfer crypto into fake platforms or wallets.

To test if a relationship is genuine, do three simple things:

• Insist on meeting in person or via video call—scammers will make excuses and eventually vanish.
• Share the person’s details with trusted friends or family—a real partner won’t mind, but a scammer will back off.

Once a scammer knows their victim has romantic feelings for them, they will then exploit that trust.
